Dr. Maria Montessori, the first female doctor in Italy, originated the Montessori approach to education in the early 1900’s.
Her method of teaching centers on the needs of the whole child using hands-on materials and cultural activities. She believed that young children are constantly learning through the absorbent mind and adults can help nurture the child’s natural interests and perceptions through the prepared environment.
The teachers at Grace Montessori Academy guide and encourage each child using one to one lesson presentation, rather than regimenting and directing the group as a unit.
The Montessori materials challenge the child to do his/her best and to be successful in completing a task. Joy of accomplishment and self-esteem are some of the rewards.
